Coaching Principles
For more than 30 years, Coaching Principles has provided coaches with foundational knowledge and sage advice for teaching and mentoring athletes to reach their full potential in sport and in life. The course is built upon five main concepts—foundational skills for coaches, understanding and managing athletes’ behavior, being a great teacher, physical training and nutrition, and management skills for coaches—and features new and updated content addressing mental health issues; sexual orientation, harassment, and abuse; motivation and burnout; and much more. Coaching Principles is based on the fifth edition of Successful Coaching, a copy of which you will receive with your course registration.

Each unit begins with an animated overview of the key concepts to be covered and a reading assignment from the text. The course then presents several interactive coaching scenarios that depict real-life situations you’re likely to face. Choices and consequences are provided for each, compelling you to weigh potential responses and anticipate outcomes of your choices. A video with Brian Gearity summarizes key takeaways for each scenario. Rounding out the units are a quiz to check understanding and reiterate the main points as well as a coaching development activity, in which you’re encouraged to record your takeaways in a comprehensive portfolio for future reference and reflection.

The course concludes with a 50-question test. A minimum score of 80 percent is required for certification, at which point your name will be added to the National Coaches Registry, an online listing of coaches who have completed Human Kinetics Coach Education courses that is used by athletic administrators to verify coaching credentials. To document your achievement, you can print or save a certificate of course completion from the website.

Sport First Aid
Sport First Aid provides detailed action steps for the initial care and prevention of the most common sport-related injuries and illnesses. The following topics are covered: performing an assessment; administering first aid for bleeding, tissue damage, and unstable injuries; providing life support; moving an injured athlete; and returning an athlete to play. The course will prepare you to respond appropriately and ensure the safety and well-being of your student-athletes. You’ll also gain insight on preventing injuries from occurring in the first place with strategies for reducing athletes’ risk of injury or illness.

The course is based on the text Sport First Aid, Sixth Edition, authored by an unparalleled team of experts in athletic training, sports medicine, exercise science and physiology, strength and conditioning, and sport coaching. Lead author Robb Rehberg is the senior medical advisor and director of game day medical operations for the National Football League (NFL) and is a professor of sports medicine and athletic training at William Paterson University of New Jersey. Rehberg is featured in video clips that introduce the various first aid situations and procedures to be covered in each course unit.

The updated sixth edition reflects the latest guidelines for administering CPR and treating concussion, dehydration, and heat illness based on guidance from leading health organizations. The course includes all-new videos demonstrating immediate action steps for the most common first aid situations; practical at-a-glance flowcharts depicting “if this, do this” response procedures; interactive activities and quizzes; and sample forms, checklists, assessments, and safety plans.

The course concludes with a 50-question test. A minimum score of 80 percent is required for certification.
