Discontinuation of offline testing for higher education instructors

Dear Human Kinetics Coach Education Higher Education Instructor,

Human Kinetics Coach Education introduced online courses and testing nearly 20 years ago. The use of Coaching Principles and Sport First Aid paper-pencil tests has steadily decreased since that time. Instructors and students have embraced the benefits of online testing, including a better user experience, less instructor involvement, fewer data entry errors, and instantaneous scoring, feedback, and reporting.

The majority of higher education instructors exclusively test online. Because so few users now use paper-pencil testing, it is no longer a viable option, and Human Kinetics Coach Education will no longer accept paper-pencil tests beginning with the 2020 fall semester.

The limitations of offline testing were made even more apparent over the last few months. During the coronavirus lockdown, many dispersed students were stranded without their course materials, test forms, and key codes, and instructors scrambled to secure and assign student IDs and key codes, submit course report forms, and collect student tests. These challenges were quickly overcome by switching to online testing.

In addition, the simple act of handling and scanning completed test forms now carries risk. In the interest of safety, online testing is a no-risk proposition.

If you’re one of the few higher education instructors who still use the paper tests, we understand that moving to online-only testing may be an inconvenience. But we are confident you’ll appreciate the streamlined processes for completing and submitting tests, the elimination of user errors that frequently occur with paper-pencil forms, and the improved turnaround time for getting test results.

Beginning immediately, please direct your college bookstore to make the following course package available for your students:

If your school has already purchased classroom courses for the fall semester, please use those courses. There’s no need to return/exchange courses. However, we do require your students test online instead of using the paper-pencil test forms.

If you’re an instructor who currently has your students test online (you don’t use the paper-pencil form), you still need to purchase the new course package moving forward. We will no longer sell course packages that contain test forms.

If you currently use the Coaching Principles online course, nothing is changing for you. You will continue to make the same online course package available to your students as you always have.

What will be different with the course package?
A difference with the online course packages is that they do not contain the print Coach Workbook which students received previously. The Coach Workbook will be added to the library of online ancillaries accessible as a PDF through the product-specific website.

Also, as a higher education instructor you will no longer need to submit course report forms or generate/assign IDs for your students. Instead, you will be granted administrator access to run reports from the website. This will minimize your time and effort and eliminate errors that frequently stem from CRF submissions. We trust this will be a welcome relief for you. Instructions on how to use this tool will be provided to you in the very near future.

We are not accepting paper tests for the 2020 fall semester. Any new courses purchased by your bookstore beginning August 1, 2020, will not contain the paper-pencil tests.

If you have any questions, or for more information or clarification on which course to provide to your students, contact your Human Kinetics higher education sales manager today.

FAQ

Why the change?
The most compelling reason for the change is COVID-19. The limitations of offline testing were made apparent over the last few months. During the coronavirus lockdown, many dispersed students were stranded without their course materials, test forms, and key codes, and instructors scrambled to secure and assign student IDs and key codes, submit course report forms, and collect student tests. These challenges are easily overcome with online testing. In addition, the simple task of handling and scanning completed test forms now carries risk. In the interest of safety, online testing is a no-risk proposition.

What courses are being affected by the change?
Courses affected by the change (going out of print) are those that contain a test packet/scan form:

Will the course components (that my students receive) be the same as before?
The new course package will be different than before. Missing will be the scantron form/test packet and the Coach Workbook. The components that your students will receive in the online course package are: Successful Coaching text (print or ebook; whichever the student purchases) and a key code letter.

What if my school bookstore purchased classroom courses before the change (prior to August 1, 2020)? Do we need to return them? Or can we still use them?
Please use the courses you purchased and/or currently have in inventory. There’s no need for you to return/exchange courses. However, we do require that you have your students test online this semester instead of using the paper-pencil test forms.

Will I need to generate IDs for my students and/or submit course report forms?
No, you will no longer need to submit course report forms or generate/assign IDs for your students. This will reduce time and effort and eliminate errors that frequently stem from CRF submissions (missing/incorrect information). We trust this will be a welcome relief for you.

How will I access my students’ test records?
Instead of the traditional “verification report,” you will be granted administrator access that allows you to run reports from the website. Instructions on how to use this tool will be provided to you in the very near future.

Is it possible for my students to purchase online courses directly from Human Kinetics instead of my bookstore?
Yes. In contrast to the classroom courses, students can purchase online courses through our website. As the instructor, you have the choice of making this option available to your students. At your request, Human Kinetics will establish a “portal page” on our website through which your students can purchase online courses directly from us. This often is a less-expensive alternative to buying courses from the bookstore.

How long may I continue to submit scan forms for grading by Human Kinetics?
We are no longer accepting paper tests beginning with the 2020 fall semester.

I relied on the Coach Workbook for in-class activities and additional assignments. Is there a way for me to keep using it?
While it won’t be available in print format, the Coach Workbook will be available as a PDF through the library of online ancillaries found on the product-specific website (which you should already have access to as a classroom instructor).

I relied on the paper-pencil test for my final exam. What are my alternatives?
We realize there are instructors who use the paper-pencil test as the final exam. This way, the instructor has the convenience of a ready-made exam, plus students receive the certification that goes with completing the test (killing two birds with one stone). However, with no physical tests to provide to students, this won't be possible moving forward. You have two options in this case: You can continue to proctor the final exam like you have been, but your students will need to take their tests online. This may require using a computer lab. The second option is for you to create your own final exam using the test bank provided in your course ancillaries. You then instruct your students to take the Human Kinetics test on their own to earn the certification.
